Welcome to the Yorkshire West District of the Methodist Church

A warm welcome is to be found throughout the Yorkshire West District of the Methodist Church. The District came into being on 1st September 2017 and was formed from a joining together of the former West Yorkshire District and part of the previous Leeds District.

The geographical area covered by the District stretches approximately 80 miles from Ingleton in the north to Penistone in the south, and 50 miles from Todmorden in the west to Knottingley in the east.

The district is made up of a range of communities and settings, including extensive rural areas, large cities and urban towns, and smaller market towns and villages.  Throughout this diverse area there are local Methodist churches of people gathering together as disciples of Jesus Christ to worship God and serve their local communities.

‘The Story of Light’ is a response by Methodists in the Yorkshire West District to the invitation for someone, sometime, somewhere to join God’s Spirit at work in the world.

Someone.  That would be you. As someone played their part in your hearing about the story of light, so you, and each of us, can play our part. We’re not all preachers, but we can all be witnesses.

Sometime. We’ve set a time, a season, to help each other focus on sharing the story. A season for our churches to shine.

Somewhere. We hope that both churches and public places will be venues, as we polish our regular activities making them shine, and do special things. But the most important somewheres are the quiet places of honest sharing, where questions are asked and the story is gently told.

The Yorkshire West District is working towards becoming accredited as a Fairtrade District. We encourage churches within the District to actively support, wherever possible, both Fairtrade and locally grown and farmed produce. We have a District Fairtrade Group to promote Fairtrade within the District and to assist churches in becoming a Fairtrade church. Circuits are also encouraged to work towards registration as Fairtrade denominational areas.

By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. Find out more
